TrackGenius or Kinovea to analyse a sprint?

Updated 2026-10-04

Kinovea is free, open source and very complete for annotating a video on a computer, but everything is measured by hand and in 2D. TrackGenius does the work on its own: it rebuilds every stride in 3D and gives speed, step length and frequency, and joint angles, from the phone's browser. Kinovea if the budget is zero and time unlimited, TrackGenius if you want numbers without spending your evening on them.

Where Kinovea wins

It is free, offline, needs no account, and with some patience it does everything: timing, annotations, semi-automatic point tracking, side-by-side videos. For a club with no budget that wants to show an athlete a position, it is still unbeatable.

Where TrackGenius changes things

On a sprint, measuring a knee angle by hand over thirty frames takes time and stays 2D. TrackGenius rebuilds the skeleton in 3D and computes everything, contact by contact, without clicking on a single joint. And because the measurement is 3D, a knee drifting inward or a slightly angled foot strike does not distort the angle.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use both?

Yes: many coaches keep Kinovea to annotate and show, and leave the measuring to an automatic tool.

Do I need a computer for TrackGenius?

No, everything happens in the browser, on the phone that filmed.

In short

  • Kinovea is free and open source, on a Windows computer, but every point, angle and distance is placed by hand, in 2D.
  • TrackGenius asks for four markers on the track, then rebuilds the stride in 3D and works out speed, step length and frequency, and joint angles on its own.
  • Kinovea if the budget is zero, TrackGenius (€4.99 a month, 7-day trial) if you want the numbers without doing them yourself.
